The Eye of Sauron Is No Longer Fiction

That was posted recently by Richard Heart, and despite the fantasy imagery and dramatic framing, the underlying point is difficult to dismiss once you sit with it properly for a few minutes. Ironically, this entire article is also being written by AI, which probably does not help ease anyone’s concerns, but here we are.
The reality is that surveillance itself is not new. Governments, corporations and intelligence agencies have been collecting data for years. Phones track location data constantly. Social media platforms build behavioural profiles. Search engines monitor interests, fears and desires. Purchases, messages, browsing patterns and social interactions are all continuously harvested and stored somewhere.
What changed with AI is not the existence of the data. It is the ability to process it meaningfully at scale.
Before modern AI systems, the sheer volume of information acted as a natural barrier. Even if institutions possessed enormous databases, humans still had to manually sift through them. There were practical limitations to observation. Most people disappeared into the noise simply because there was too much noise.
Now the machine can understand the noise.
A decade of posts, comments, purchases, voice recordings and interactions can now be analysed within seconds to construct a surprisingly accurate psychological profile. AI can infer political leanings, emotional vulnerabilities, personality traits, habits, relationship networks and behavioural patterns from fragments most people would consider meaningless in isolation.
What once looked like disconnected breadcrumbs now forms a map.
This is where the idea of the “panopticon” becomes relevant. Philosopher Jeremy Bentham proposed the concept centuries ago as a prison design where inmates never knew whether they were actively being watched. The uncertainty itself changed behaviour. People internalised surveillance because they assumed observation was always possible.
The digital version of that system is infinitely more sophisticated.
Most people now voluntarily upload their lives into interconnected databases while carrying location tracking devices in their pockets twenty four hours a day. AI simply gives those systems eyes capable of interpreting what they see.
That is why the “Eye of Sauron” metaphor resonates. In Tolkien’s world, the Eye represented concentrated attention and overwhelming reach. It was not all seeing in a magical sense, but once it focused on something, hiding became increasingly difficult.
Modern AI driven surveillance operates similarly. Most individuals remain invisible until systems decide they are not. At that point, years of historical context suddenly become searchable, sortable and actionable.
And importantly, this capability does not require some giant secret conspiracy. Much of it is emerging naturally through incentives. Corporations want behavioural prediction because prediction increases profits. Governments want predictive systems because prediction increases control and efficiency. AI lowers the cost of both.
That is the true shift taking place.
A relatively small number of actors can now process what previously would have required enormous bureaucracies and countless analysts. AI massively amplifies institutional leverage. The surveillance state no longer depends purely on armies of humans watching screens. The machine itself increasingly performs the interpretation.
This is also why conversations around immutable infrastructure, self custody and genuinely decentralised systems are becoming more important. If AI driven systems eventually integrate deeply into finance, communication and identity, then control over infrastructure becomes everything.
The question is no longer whether something uses blockchain technology. The real question is whether there are human levers somewhere behind the curtain. Can accounts be frozen? Can transactions be reversed? Can access be denied? Can rules be changed under pressure?
Because once intelligent surveillance merges with centralised control structures, sovereignty stops being a philosophical luxury and starts becoming a practical form of defence.
Ironically, AI itself is not inherently evil. You are reading the output of an AI system right now. CipherBot itself exists because of these technologies. The same tools that can educate, build and empower people can also profile, monitor and manipulate them depending on who controls the infrastructure surrounding them.
That is why the architecture matters more than the marketing.
Most people still imagine surveillance through an outdated lens where some exhausted human analyst manually reads messages in a dark room somewhere. Modern systems do not work like that anymore. Machines can now ingest enormous quantities of information continuously, correlate patterns instantly and generate predictive models automatically.
They do not sleep. They do not forget. They do not get overwhelmed.
And that is precisely why Richard Heart’s post struck a nerve with so many people.
Before AI, much of this remained theoretical.
Now it is operational.
